Top Tips To Help You Stick To Your Workout Routine

Picture this: your alarm goes off in the morning. You roll over, turn your alarm off and snuggle back into bed. I’ll workout tomorrow you tell yourself … Sound familiar?

Well, I’m here to help you stick to your workout routine and smash those workout goals you have set for yourself.

Below I’ve rounded up my top tips to help you stick to your workout routine and be the best version of yourself all day everyday. And yes, I do follow these tips myself.

Pack and prepare the night before

One small task for you at night leads to a smoother start to your workout the following day. Packing your gym bag the night before and leaving it by the door will make it easier to get going in the morning.

Or, if you work out at home like me, lay your clothes next to your bed so you can roll out of bed and into your workout clothes!

If you need extra help, you could sleep in your gym clothes (no judgement here) or leave your alarm with your gym bag by the door. Whatever works for you!

Buddy up

We all know that hanging out, I mean working out, with a friend or two means guaranteed fun.

Plus, you’ll be able to hold each other to account and make sure you smash that workout before devouring some smashed avo together afterwards #healthygains.

On weekends, I love to go for big walks with Adam. It’s a great way to get our blood flowing, and gives us a chance to catch up on things that happened during the week and make plans for the weekend.

Workout in the evening

Not a morning person? No worries! Workouts are best done at the time of day that suits and works best for you. So take your gym bag with you to work, and head to your workout straight after.

I’ve definitely had days where I’ve stayed up a bit too late the night before and really struggle to get up in the morning. Because I have busy days and do need my sleep, I’ll skip my workout on these mornings, but make sure I get it done in the evening.

Get a fancy new workout outfit

I mean, who doesn’t want to a) go shopping for more clothes and b) look super stylish while working out?

Let your new outfits (that’s right, plural) serve as your inspiration to get out there and get your blood flowing.

Workout at home

Don’t want to schlep yourself all the way to the gym? Turns out you don’t have to!

Thanks to the wonderful world of technology you can download workout apps from fitness gurus and use your own furniture as an alternative to gym equipment.

Instead of a bench, for example, use a (sturdy) chair for incline push-ups, tricep dips and split squats.

I’ve been doing BBG by Kayla Itsines on the Sweat app and can confirm I’ve been far more consistent at smashing my workouts when I don’t have to head all the way to the gym. Plus, I love that I can stick to my workout plan from anywhere in the world!

Set a goal

What better way to stay motivated and get yourself out the door! Whether you set a personal body or weight goal for yourself, or sign up for something like a 30 day yoga challenge, a fun run or a triathlon, the thrill of working towards your goal will have you leaping out of bed like there’s no tomorrow.

My motivations this year include our Bali trip which is coming up in August, our wedding in April next year and just looking out for my mental and physical health and wellbeing in general.

Create a new workout playlist

Bust out those (exercise) moves to rhythm of your favourite tunes. Research has shown that music has a psychological effect on humans, especially when they exercise.

In fact, Costas Karageorghis, who is one of the world’s leading experts on the psychology of exercise music states that music is like a type of legal performance enhancing drug (winning much?!)

If you’re anything like me you can’t help but dance along whenever your favourite song comes on, so why not channel that movement and enthusiasm into a playlist to motivate your workout.

These tips will have you sticking to your workout routine in no time. Of course, it is important to listen to your body also. So if you need a rest day, or need to do a lighter workout, make sure you do so.
